Do you only cheer for the winning team?

Many management situations require courage, which fuels on three elements:

  • A clear why (see my previous post);
  • Staying on your own team no matter what;
  • Being ok with any feeling that pops up.

Even when you know exactly what you are fighting for, to create indomitable courage you also need to know who you’re fighting alongside with. You need to be able to rely on your loyalty to yourself.

If the path is hard, there will be moments of failure. When those come, if you start thinking that you’re a worthless idiot, you took a stupid decision, you regret doing what you did: your courage will instantly vanish.

Your brain knows how you normally speak to yourself in times of failure. If you usually speak to yourself with contempt or disappointment, it won’t support your ambition with the force of full belief. Why bother giving it all when your commanding officer will anyway yell at you?

To create iron-clad courage, decide right now how you will speak to yourself if failures come. Decide how you will commend yourself for daring, trying, persisting. Write it in your calendar; remind yourself regularly; and do it actually when the time comes!
