Oh, how I hate this question!! I hate it with a passion. Depending on who asks it, I get evasive or aggressive:
“None of your business! Do I ask YOU how it’s going with YOUR New Year resolution? Don’t you know the stress I have at work, my little one’s sleepless nights, my dog who ate my homework? Mind your belly-button and leave mine alone.”
Truth is, I only react like that when I’m not satisfied with my progress.
When things are going well for my goal, I don’t mind that question at all. I answer with pride, cool as a cucumber, completely convinced that my objective is as good as done.
The problem, really, is not so much the question I’m asked. It’s the answer I give myself.
There is no such thing as a perfect, flawless road to achieving your resolution. Instead of telling yourself you’re a failure and resenting others whose questions remind you that you (think you) are – look for how these temporary setbacks mean NOTHING about whether you’re going to achieve your goal or not.
They just give you indications on HOW you’re going to achieve your goal, by helpfully closing some roads.
Of course you will succeed. Right now, you just happen to be learning what not to do.
