Pining for Xmases of yore

When I lived in Japan, I once got a card that showed our lifetime as mountain hike. Each year going full circle around the same mountain. Each year getting higher & gaining more perspective over the landscape below.

I loved how this circular, ascending path explained why previous Xmases feel closer than this year’s summer, as the path winds around the same side of the mountain in December, opposite from the side of the mountain we’re on in August.

This card reminded me of how our mind likes time-travelling. It can’t stay one second in the present. Anything is a valid reason to jump back or ahead.

Since our thoughts create our feelings, our mood goes time-travelling too. In the past, we sometimes find pleasant memories. Mostly, we like to meet regret, resentment, sadness, embarrassment.

In the future, some see vision & excitement; most of us search for worry, impatience, powerlessness.

I help my clients realize why being in the present is what brings peace and prosperity. Because your past and your future are just thoughts you’re having right now, in the present. You can change them, rewrite them, right now. You can create a past you’re proud of and a future that truly brings you success.
