When you try to reach a New Year’s resolution, whether it’s losing some kgs, going running a few times a week, starting your own company, or meeting the guy (that’s my case by the way – if your awesome 45-ish cousin is single and lives not insanely far from Göteborg, send him my way) you’re bound to have some amount of failure, doubt, confusion, frustration and discouragement along the road. To name only a few of the usual setbacks.
The way you react to them is key to your success. Do you accept that they are part of the journey, let them slide and keep going? Or do you make them mean that YOU are a failure, a disappointment, unworthy, incapable of change and generally a big waste of air?
You’ve just added resistance to your unpleasant emotion. Layered suffering on top of pain.
The discomfort of unpleasant emotions is short-lived. But suffering brought on by negative self-judgment? Oh man, THAT can last an entire lifetime.
Stop resisting, just allow the pain to be there (it’ll move on quite quickly), keep going and you’ll eventually reach your goal.
